What is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy?
According to statistics, One third of all adults
experience some form of tinnitus some time in their lives, while 10 to 15% develop persistent tinnitus which
requires medical attention. Since medical research shows tinnitus on the rise, experts are getting busy,
trying to find a solution.
Tinnitus is the perceived sound of ringing, buzzing, whirring in the ears and is usually a result of inner ear
damage. Since tinnitus is perceived, it is difficult to physically measure or treat the symptoms. Tinnitus
Retraining Therapy is an effective form of therapy that uses low frequency noises along with psychological methods
in order to guide the afflicted to a state of minimal awareness of the ringing sensations. .

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is shown to be more effective than the pharmacological approach. Drugs that are
prescribed for the patient are to help alleviate some of the stress associated with the disease, but it doesn’t
eliminate the noise. The goal of Tinnitus retraining therapy is to make the noises less noticeable and manageable
to your ears so you won’t become dependent on the drugs.
Dr. Pawel Jastreboff
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Pawel Jastreboff . Dr. Jastreboff discovered that
some people with tinnitus were not troubled by the noises and some had even grown accustomed to them. His research
showed that even though the volume levels of the noises were the same in some individuals, each person’s
perceptions of the noises were different.
After the conclusion of Jastreboffs’ research, he came up the basic principles of tinnitus retraining therapy.
He concluded that normal daily noises such as the humming of a refrigerator or cars driving by are not perceivable
to most people because our nervous systems are aware that these noises are insignificant and therefore a signal
isn’t sent to the cerebral cortex.
Through his research, Jastreboff discovered that the nervous system could be trained to ignore the annoying
ringing sounds and bury them deep down into the subconscious level so the conscious mind isn’t aware. This is the
principle surrounding Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Treatment
The very first goal of tinnitus retraining therapy is to remove any detrimental psychological thinking
associated with the tinnitus sounds. The second goal is to make sure that you're still aware of the noises during
your treatment. If you aren't able to detect any noises during the treatment, it may not be possible to gain any
benefit out of that particular session.
The treatment involves wearing a frequency device behind your ear whenever tinnitus is most
noticeable. Because absence of sound may worsen your tinnitus, a therapist will send a short frequency sound to the
device. Since the noise being sent to the device masks the quietness that makes tinnitus worse, you are supposed to
become less annoyed by the sounds and block any negative feelings related to the tinnitus. The low level sounds
being sent to the device are assumed to activate the nervous system to reprogram itself to see tinnitus as a
meaningless noise instead of an annoying sound. This ultimately supposed to prevent you from becoming stressed by
the tinnitus sounds.
How long does the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Last?
Tinnitus retraining therapy usually lasts from one to two years depending on your progress.
