Do You Have Pulsating Tinnitus?
There are literally millions of people in the world
suffering from tinnitus. Most are aware of their symptoms but many are kept in the dark as to what's causing
their condition and aren't sure as to which treatment protocol to follow.
About 3% of these people are afflicted with Pulsating Tinnitus, also known
as pulsatile or vascular tinnitus. The purpose of this article is to explain the causes and treatments for
pulsating tinnitus.
What is Pulsating Tinnitus?
Pulsating Tinnitus is actually a symptom and not a disease. The
afflicted person describes hearing a distinguished internal beat in their ears that is in time with their own
pulse. The noise they often hear resembles a thumping, swooshing, humming, or blowing sound that can be caused
by a number of different ailments.
The Cause of Pulsating
Tinnitus:
Since an increase in blood flow to the inner ear structures can result in
pulsating tinnitus, there can be many different causes.
Chronic Inflammation in the Inner Ear Structures
A chronic form of inflammation in the delicate ear structures can result in an
increase in blood flow to that area. The Eustachian tube, located in the ear, remains open which results in
an echo type sound originating from the person's own breathing or heartbeat. When there is damage to the
eustachian tube, tinnitus usually results. Fluid then fills the middle ear spaces which results in pulsating
tinnitus.
Atherosclerosis
Hardening of the arteries due to atherosclerosis can also cause pulsating
tinnitus. This disease causes blood vessels to become rough which affects the blood flow, therefore
increasing sound sensations to the ears..
Otosclersosis
This is caused by a hardening of the stirrup bone in the middle ear. This
condition prevents vibrations to the middle ear which prevents it from detecting sounds. The long term affect can
be gradual hearing loss.
Glomus Tumors
This is a type of tumor that can develop in the middle ear. These can be
surgically removed and are usually not dangerous.
Sinus Problems
Pulsating tinnitus can also result from the development of sinus issues due to a
build up of inner ear mucus. The normal drainage route for inner ear mucus is normally through the eustachian
tubes but due to the thickening, the mucus becomes blocked. Sinus problems can be caused by a person taking too
many antibiotics.
Other causes: Vascular Disease, hyperthyroidism, Stress, prescription drugs,
middle ear tumors
