What is Tinnitus?

The effects of tinnitus are also one of the most annoying sensations a person can experience. Can you imaging having to endure a constant ringing sound 24 hours a day? Although ringing and buzzing sounds are most commonly heard, there are other sounds: Some may experience ringing, beating, clicking, buzzing, roaring, hissing, chirping, sizzling, humming, rumbling, shrieking, whistling, clanging, etc. Some tinnitus symptoms may spontaneously stop while others may go on forever.

The cause of tinnitus can be due to one of many different ailments or environmental factors. The most common cause is from long term exposure to loud noises. Other causes could be from stress, vascular disease, head injuries, chronic ear infections, certain foods, prescription drugs, allergies, etc..
Foods that have been know to either cause or exacerbate the symptoms of tinnitus in some people include: red wine, cheese, chocolate, and grain-based alcohol.

There are hundreds of drugs that can cause or make tinnitus worse. If you experience tinnitus after you have taken medication, you should tell your doctor immediately.

Since tinnitus is not considered a disease but a symptom, it makes since to treat the underlying cause in order to get rid of the symptoms.
